Forty kilometres of the Babai River flows through the heart of the Bardia National Park in western Nepal. In 2011, the government opened the river for catch and release angling. As it is protected, the river supports a healthy population of Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora) and Bullseye Snakehead (Channa marulius) and other species like Goonch (Bagarius yarelli) and Indian Trout Barb (Raiamas bola) can also be caught on lures. The average size of the Mahseer is relatively small, at around 1 kg. However, there are plenty of fish to be caught and specimens up to 15 kg are found in this river.
The Babai Valley is one of the most pristine wildernesses left in the Himalayas and in addition to the excellent fishing, you will also have the opportunity to view a lot of wildlife, including the Asian Elephant and if you are lucky, the Royal Bengal Tiger.
Recommended trip: Float trip from Chepang to the Babai dam. Duration: 3 nights/4 days, camping in the wilderness. Season: October – June.
However, one day fishing is also possible. You can enter the Babai Valley in the morning and fish till 5PM and you must come out of National Park before 5 PM. You need to stay at one of the Jungle lodges in Thakurdwara. Your lodge will be able arrange your transportation, permit and guide.
You can also walk and camp the river. But you will mostly be covering the lower stretch of the river.
Getting there:
- Fly Kathmandu – Nepalgunj (1 hour) and drive 1.5 hours to the put-in point (Chepang).
- Drive from Kathmandu to Chepang (around 550 km. Around 14 hours drive)
- Public bus. Kathmandu – Kohalpur – Chepang
Tackles:
As Babai river is a relatively small spring fed river, and most fish are small in size, we usually fish it with small and light tackles. The best results we get is fishing from the raft itself. The golden spoon works wonders in Babai River. Remember to reel it in very fast – thats when they take it. If you reel in slow, they just follow the lure and dont take it.
Fly fishing looks very promising, but its really difficult to catch one on a fly. You can see fish follow the fly but they dont take it. However the Indian Trout Barb (Raimas Bola) take fly at the very bank of the river when you are about to take out the fly and cast again. We caught Mahseer and Raimas Bolas and snake heads on streamer flies.
Things to remember:
As Babai flows through National Park you will require a permit for fishing, camping and rafting.
